Oil can leak from stern tubes and thrusters, particularly if shaft seals are damaged or worn. Silt and mechanical damage from fishing nets or ropes can accelerate normal wear. Thrusters can be more affected because of harbor debris.

Header tanks ensure positive pressure on lubricants, so leakage is normally outwards instead of water coming inwards.
Greased bearings and open gearing of cranes winches and windlass are subject to water wash.
Hydraulic systems (deck hatches and cranes) can be subject to leaks through hose failures.
