MOTORCYCLE COOLANT

Motorcycle Coolant

You need to set up a regular routine for checking your motorcycle coolant in line with your manufacturer’s recommendations. This is important because motorcycle engine coolant deteriorates over time and this can affect the performance of your engine. You should always use the best motorcycle coolant available for your bike to maintain an efficient temperature range. Modern coolants contain a ready mix of coolant and motorcycle antifreeze.

When does motorcycle coolant need changing?

While you should always check your motorcycle coolant regularly looking out for signs of aluminium corrosion or changes in the mix of coolant and fluid, you should definitely change it every 2 years or 16,000 miles.

If you find that your motorbike coolant needs topping up, you should use the same coolant as is already in the system.

How to change motorcycle coolant

This short guide is intended to help you understand the process. You should always refer to a detailed workshop manual and wear protective gloves before undertaking a change yourself. Only work on a cold engine. Alternatively, consult your local workshop.

  1. Remove the radiator cap and any fairing panels
  2. Drain off the old motorcycle engine coolant into a large container capable of holding 2.5 litres
  3. Drain the reservoir tank if your bike has one removing its cap and hose
  4. Re-attach any hoses you have taken off during draining including the reservoir hose
  5. Flush the system with clean tap water at normal water pressure
  6. Flush the system with a cooling system cleaner
  7. Re-fit the drain plug and washer, re-fill with water, run the engine for 10 minutes and then drain down once the engine has cooled
  8. Re-fit the drain bolt and fill the engine with new motorcycle coolant
  9. Top up the expansion tank if necessary
  10. Start and run the engine for 2 or 3 minutes
  11. Allow the engine to cool and top up the motorbike coolant if necessary
