What is automatic transmission fluid?
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is a critical fluid for lubricating your car's transmission. Selection of the correct type is essential to the smooth operation and durability of the modern automatic transmission. While early designs of self-shifting transmissions provided 3 or 4 gear ratios, modern computer-controlled versions offer 6 or more output speeds, greatly improving driveability and fuel efficiency.
As transmissions have become more sophisticated, advanced technology fluids are required to ensure continuous smooth shifting under all driving conditions. Adding further to the complexity of ATFs has been the rapid emergence of different technologies, the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), which require their own specialised fluids.

TRANSMAX ATF DEX-Merc Multivehicle
Replaces Castrol ATF Dex III
Castrol TRANSMAX ATF DEX/Merc Multivehicle is recommended for use in GM and Ford vehicles requiring Dexron III or Mercon fluids and the automatic transmissions of a wide range of Japanese cars, light commercial vehicles and SUVs. Additionally, it is suitable for use in most European passenger cars requiring a Dexron III/Mercon fluid.
Application
Recommended for many transmissions used in General Motors cars, Holden, Isuzu, Opel and Hydramatic transmissions used in a range of vehicles. It is also suitable for many earlier model Japanese vehicles where Dexron type fluids are recommended. It is recommended for other transmissions where Dexron and Dexron II fluids are specified except Mercedes-Benz, ZF, BMW, Voith and Renk.

TRANSMAX ATF Z
Replaces Castrol TRANSMAX Z
Castrol TRANSMAX ATF Z, formulated with Smooth Drive Technology™, is a full synthetic automatic transmission fluid. It can solve shiftability problems in automatic transmissions, enabling longer transmission life. It is recommended for use in automatic and semi-automatic transmissions used in cars, buses and coaches. As such, it is recommended for fleets employing a mixture of Voith, Renk, ZF, Allison and MB transmissions alongside the Leyland Pneumocyclic and Hydracyclic units. Extended oil drain [120,000 km] in ZF Ecomat and EcoLife, MB AT and Voith AT.
