Open cast mining

Open Cast Mining
Productivity and efficiency drive business profitability in the mining industry. Castrol’s Liquid Engineers can help keep your equipment working effectively for longer.

Like you, we know that keeping mining equipment protected, prolonging equipment life and extending maintenance intervals can have a significant impact on a mine’s profitability.

We have dedicated products for draglines and shovels, developed specifically to enhance your mining operations by helping to reduce consumption and the risk of mechanical failures. Our global reach ensures you’re never far from our reliable supply.

Dragline

Dragline

Our liquid engineers recommend the following products for the various application points on your draglines.

Open gear compounds

  • Lubricants that deliver exceptional film retention on exposed gear teeth operating at slower speeds
  • Powerful adhesive properties to resist fling off – a challenge even at moderate speeds, whether gears mesh vertically or horizontally
  • Good pumpability and resistant to plugging
  • Resistance to dust that can form abrasive compounds

Bearing greases

  • Temperature tolerance – plain bearings may have to operate in low temperatures or even Arctic conditions. In some applications, bearing lubricants must resist high temperatures without losing lubricating performance
  • Greases must provide protection from corrosion
  • High loads and extreme pressures can cause greases to ‘squeeze out’ leading to loss of lubrication

Wire rope lubricants

  • Perform in mining operations where maximum rope life must be achieved despite harsh operating conditions
  • Need a lubricant that imparts strong adhesive and film forming properties, corrosion protection and anti-wear characteristics
  • Environmentally responsible rope lubricant free from many ecologically undesirable additives

Propel lubricants

  • Ability to lubricate under boundary conditions to prevent vibration and shuttering
  • Extreme adhesive properties to resist squeeze out at contact points and resist dirt that can form abrasive compounds
  • The ability to form a lubricating film that remains tough and firm at high temperatures, yet pliable and resistant to cracking or peeling when cold
Shovels

Shovels

Our liquid engineers recommend the following products for the various application points on your shovels.

Enclosed gear oils

  • Very high loads at metal-to-metal contact points can cause loss of lubricant film, leading to tooth wear and damage
  • Oil must have a strong film strength to maintain a durable, persistent protective layer
  • Lubricants able to handle a wide range of operating temperatures, pressures and shock loads
  • Oxidation resistance
  • Lubricants must exhibit high demulsibility to avoid water contamination forming sludge
