As the festive season approaches, some of us are making plans to hit the long road for the holidays - and here at Castrol, we care for your road safety. For example; did you know that the global average is 18 road deaths per 100,000 people; yet here in South Africa, we're averaging 31.8 deaths per 100,000? That's scary; but not as scary as the fact that almost all of these (entirely avoidable) deaths were caused by poor driving habits. Driver distractions, speeding, and driving under the influence were all cited as causes of accidents; all things that are well-within your control as a responsible driver.
Before hitting the road this festive season, remind yourself - or as a passenger, remind your driver - to please practice these great road safety tips; after all, we've all got families and loved ones we'd love to see. Safety starts with the roadworthiness of the vehicle you'll be traveling in: ensure the spare wheel and driving lights are good – and that your oil is topped up, of course! Plan your trip accordingly; account for regular stops (even overnight if necessary), and don't be a hero - if you're feeling drowsy, there's no shame in pulling over at a safe stop for a short break.
Even though you might feel like a budding Formula 1 driver, remember to please obey the rules of the road - after all, they're there for our safety. Don't speed; maintain a safe following distance, drive to the conditions of the road and ensure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts. Try to avoid driving between 1-5am; but if you must, ensure you're well-rested and remain extra vigilant - not only for other drivers, but for roaming wild animals too.
We’d love for you to enjoy safe journeys, and the time spent with friends and loved ones this festive season!
