Oil is the lifeblood of your engine so it’s a good idea to carry out a regular car engine oil check. An oil change is a very simple job that will help keep you safe on the road.

 

You can either ask your local workshop to carry out the oil change for you or do it yourself. If doing it yourself, you should always wear gloves and eye protection if you are working under your vehicle. And make sure only to work when the engine and the oil are cool.

 

There are 5 straightforward stages to changing your oil.

  1. PREPARATION. Staying safe and having the right tools.
  2. DRAINING THE OIL. Getting the old oil out.
  3. REPLACING THE OIL FILTER. Out with the old and in with the new.
  4. REPLACING THE OIL. Using the best oil for your engine in the right quantity.
  5. CHECKING THE OIL LEVEL. Use the dipstick to check the level of the new oil making sure that it does not exceed the maximum level as this can cause higher pressure within the engine.

How much does changing oil cost?

 

This depends upon your engine size, the make and model of your car and the quality of the oil you are using. If you decide to carry out the oil change yourself you will only pay the cost of the oil itself, a new filter and any tools or accessories that you may not already have.

 

If you ask a workshop to carry out the work for you, you will pay for their labour charges.
